National Freedom Day School Activities

Are you looking for National Freedom Day School Activities for your children or students?

This post will give you a few ideas for fun and informative activities that children can take part in to learn about the importance of National Freedom Day and how it relates to our country's principals of human rights, freedom and patriotism.

The Joe Foss Institute is a non-profit organization founded with the mission to inform and promote Patriotism, Integrity, Public Service, and Freedom; therefore we believe that National Freedom Day is an ideal time of year to share these important values.

National Freedom Day

What is National Freedom Day?

National Freedom day is a celebration that memorializes President Abraham Lincoln signing the thirteenth amendment into the United States Constitution.

Under the thirteenth amendment slavery and involuntary solitude became illegal in the United States.

The holiday is celebrated on February 1st, the date that President Lincoln signed it into law in 1865.

National Freedom Day marks an important time in the history of our country and any National Freedom Day School Activities that you plan should reflect that importance.

Take a look at some of these suggestions for Freedom Day activities to get a few ideas of the things that you can do to celebrate the occasion.

  • You could have students construct a timeline that chronicles the rise and fall of slavery in the United States, emphasizing the important roles that individuals like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln played in slavery's eventual end.

  • Organize a play that focuses on the important events in slavery and who the key people that were involved in those events were.

  • Tie the events of slavery in the United States to the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century. Emphasize the fact that, even though slaves had been freed, they were not considered to be equal once they became free.

  • With freedom and equality being central themes behind your National Freedom Day School Activities, think of activities that emphasize the fact that democracy is something that ties into the underlying ideas behind National Freedom Day

Holidays like National Freedom Day fall in line with other important national holidays like Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Constitution Day, President's Day, Bill of Rights Day and Flag Day that are in place to help us appreciate the freedom and liberty that we enjoy in our country.

Above all, have your National Freedom Day school activities focus on the fact that the freedom of democracy and human rights that we have in our country are possible because of brave veterans and active members of the armed forces who fight to uphold those values.

It's because of the importance of remembering our service members that we offer our VIP (Veterans Inspiring Patriotism) program.

We take an actual veteran—someone who has bravely fought and risked their lives to defend our freedom in combat theaters—and give them a forum to speak directly with a classroom of students.

Through the program, the highlight of your Freedom Day school activities can be the opportunity to speak with someone who can tell them, from firsthand experience, how important defending our country's ideals and way of life is.

This service is done for no fee because we feel that education of our fundamental US values is critical to growing as a nation.
