Resources for Teachers
Tuesday, 07 February 2012
The internet has an incredibly wide range of valuable resources available to help teachers.  The trouble, for most teachers, is in  tracking down these quality lesson plans, activities, and interactives.

In each of the upcoming editions of the Joe Foss Beacon we will be highlighting a website that will help you in supplementing your civics curriculum.

Here is one of the first resources we will highlight: http://www.icivics.org/

icivics

iCivics was created by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.  The site is intended to serve as a resource for teaching students civic concepts and to encourage them to become active citizens.

iCivics boasts 16 free educational, interactive games aimed at 21st century learners. Selections include "Do I Have a Right?," which focuses on constitutional rights, and "Branches of Power," which examines the relationships between the three branches of government. Games can be played within a single class period and are aligned to state standards.

Other resources on the iCivics site include comprehensive civics lesson plans and topic-based webquests.

Approaching The Topic of Democracy

On December 15th 1941, eight days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and three days after the United States officially declared war on the fascist forces of Germany and Italy, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed that day to be Bill Of Rights Day to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the bill.
