Veterans Day Quotes

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

With Veterans Day fast-approaching, here at the Joe Foss Institute we wanted to share some patriotic quotes. Our mission is to promote and teach Patriotism, Public Service, Integrity, and a deep appreciation for America’s Freedoms. Keeping that in mind, we hope that the following quotes will not only inspire, but can be used to help teach and interest children about our shared American values.

  • "When our perils are past, shall our gratitude sleep?” –George Canning
  • “Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul”—Michel de Montaigne
  • “In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot”—Mark Twain
  • “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of readiness to die”—G.K. Chesterton
  • “There never was a good war or a bad peace”—Benjamin Franklin
  • "We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude"—Cynthia Ozick
  • "This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave"—Elmer Davis
  • “In war, there are no unwounded soldiers”—José Narosky
  • "The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war"—Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit
  • “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them”—John Fitzgerald Kennedy

November 11 was initially recognized as Armistice Day, celebrating the end of the First World War, and the soldiers who participated. Later, after the Second World War, the holiday was expanded to celebrate the sacrifices and accomplishments of all veterans in all wars. The proceeding Veteran’s day quotes speak about courage and war, two things that veterans are experts on, and help us remember the patriotism and commitment to public service that led them to serve their country. As the President stated last Veteran’s Day, "To all of them -- to our veterans, to the fallen and to their families -- there is no tribute, no commemoration, no praise that can truly match the magnitude of your service and your sacrifice."

The Joe Foss Institute is helping to provide resources to students and teachers about patriotism, public service, and therefore Veteran’s Day. One of the primary ways in which we help teach these valuesis with our VIP (Veterans Inspiring Patriotism) program which sends real veterans into your classrooms. This allows the students to receive, not only instruction on the values of public service and patriotism, but real one on one interaction with a remarkable solder who can relate their own particular experiences. In addition to Veteran’s Day Quotes, you can bring them direct quotes from brave men and women who have actually fought and sacrificed to defend America’s freedoms.
