School Assembly Idea

Wednesday, 24 November 2010

This school assembly idea comes from the Joe Foss Institute as part of our mission to promote the values of Patriotism, Civic Responsibility, Integrity, and America’s Freedoms. Children are going to inherit this country, and we believe that passing on an understanding of our shared values is crucial to making sure America maintains its leadership role in the world.

We are getting into the time of year when students are eagerly looking forward to their winter breaks, and they are getting a little restless in the classroom. A fun way to pull their interest back in to the classroom and schooling is with a school assembly. As we are all thinking of Thanksgiving and the Holidays, it is a good time to also bring up those American values of freedom, liberty, civic duty, and patriotism.

The Joe Foss Institute can assist your school with our VIP (Veterans Inspiring Patriotism) program. It is a public service which we offer for FREE to school and other educational environments. We help bring a US Veteran speaker into the classroom in order to share their story of devotion, sacrifice, and public service.

The purpose of this school assembly idea is to allow the students to interact with actual veterans who have made significant sacrifices for our country. They have both prepared materials (put together in association with professional educators) and their own experiences to share with students. Ultimately, it is a great opportunity to impart the real meaning of service to one’s country by giving them time with a soldier that has actual lived by that standard.

This school assembly idea is also applicable to smaller, individual classroom-based events.

This service is able to offer this program to any educational entity for free, thanks to the generous donations and support of the community. These values—integrity, patriotism, public service, and a devotion to freedom—are not things you can put a price tag on, and we believe, as Joe Foss believed, that it is a duty to share them with the next generation.

Whether through school assemblies, classroom speakers, or our Joe Foss Institute Scholarship Contest Series (through which we award college scholarship money to outstanding students), our non-profit is fully committed to making sure that our children grow up respecting the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, and our shared American values.
